Social Entrepreneurship and the New Activism
PBS is airing a fascinating documentary series titled The New Heroes that profiles fourteen social entrepreneurs as “they develop innovations that bring life-changing tools and resources to people desperate for viable solutions.” If you don’t have time to watch the show, check out the site for in-depth profiles of these activist business owners who are changing the world with their vision and strategies for change. Some of the people profiled include: -Albina Ruiz, a Peruvian woman who started Cuidad Saludable, a waste management company designed to create jobs, develop sustainable living, and empower residents living among trash dumps to change their lives; -Maria Teresa Leal founded Coopa-Roca, a sewing cooperative located in a slum of Rio de Janeiro, that has begun working with fashion designers in Milan and Paris; -David Green whose manufacturing and distribution company, Project Impact, was founded to help get medical supplies and healthcare services to people in India.
